Lord Of The Flies: Chapter 1
Prediction: I believe that "The Lord Of The Flies" is about a boy who suffers from a mental illness has an attachment to insects.
Clarifications: The setting of the story is based on a tropical island. During WWll, English families would send their children abroad to avoid the constant bombing from the Nazis weather it be via plane or train. A plane full of English schoolboys was gunned down and landed on the island. The scar is a part of the island where the plane tore through. Taking with it, everything in its path, leaving destroyed trees and barren landscape.
Questions: Why is the setting in a jungle? What's the scar?
Connections: As a child, I spent all my time outside. I loved exploring the forest and being out in nature. I understand what the boys must be feeling. This is a new adventure for them, to them they're situation is far from dire.
Summary: A plane of English schoolboys who are fleeing the bombing from the Nazis, crash on a tropical island. Two boys named Ralph and Piggy are the first to find each other and when the discover a conch shell, they use it to summon the other lost boys on the island. They hold a meeting to make sense of their situation when they find another party of boys who belong to a choir. The boys all hold an election for a leader where Ralph wins over the choir boy named Jack. Eventually Ralph, Jack, and another boy named Simon, go out into the jungle to understand where they are. They come across a mountain of pink granite and find that they are alone on the island with no sign of any people. While on their exploration, the boys come across a pig desperately trapped in the thick foliage. Jack attempts to kill but in the end fails. They finally made their way back to the rest of the boys at the beach platform.

Lord Of The Flies: Chapter 2
Prediction: The boys start to play games and treat their island like a getaway.
Clarifications: The conch shell is used to summon meetings among the boys. The conch allows any of the boys to speak and discuss topics. The boys choose to make a fire for rescue. They would use the smoke to signal to passing ships and planes.
Questions: What's the conch shell used for? Why do the boys make a fire?
Connections: As a kid I loved going out in the sun with a magnifying lens and setting leaves and twigs on fire. I can relate to the boys and the awe of how to make a fire.
Summary: Ralph decides to set rules for the boys. Rules that cover how to use the conch shell. Ralph then decides that a signal fire would be the first step in becoming rescued. All the boys get to the feet and rush up the mountain leaving Ralph and Piggy alone on the beach. All the boys began finding pieces of dead branches and logs and piling them near the mountain side. Jack steals Piggy's glasses so he can start a fire. Quickly the fire grew massively and began to spread into the trees and grasses, igniting half of the island. Fire gets to out of hand and soon the boys realize that one of the younger boys has gone missing. Only to be swallowed up in the flames.

Lord Of The Flies: Chapter 3
Prediction: I believe that the boys are soon going to become hungry and must find food.
Clarifications: Jack, in the beginning is tracking pigs on a hunt. The "beastie" is a monster dreamt up by the younger children on the island and has slowly cought hold in the minds of the other boys.
Questions: What is Jack doing in the beginning of the chapter? What's the "beastie"?
Connections: I understand the frustration that Ralph must be feeling. None of the other boys are willingly to help him make shelters or make life on the island any easier.
Summary: Jack is hunting in the jungle, carefully searching for pig tracks. He finds a pig hiding in the foliage and strikes the pig with a spear hoping for meat but to no avail. Jack makes his way to the beach after the unsuccessful hunt and sees Ralph and Simon try to build makeshift shelters. Ralph and Jack have a dispute on which is more important. Building shelters to protect them from the elements or hunting to get food. Ralph then decides that a meeting to make sure that everyone cooperates in the group should be in order. The boys then begin talking about the "beastie". A monster that had been dreamt up by the younger boys and has started to take hold in the minds of the older boys. As Ralph and Jack left for the bathing pool to take a break and talk. Simon made his way up the mountain and went to his little sanctuary and spent the rest of the afternoon in the small space of grass and thick forest as the sun slid away.

Lord Of The Flies: Chapter 4
Prediction: I believe that Ralph is going to hold a meeting to get the other boys more active in helping their situation.
Clarifications: Roger knows that he could seriously injure Henry but seeing how there are no adults or parenting figures, no one is stopping him. He is playing this dangerous game with his new found power over people smaller than him.
Questions: Why was Roger throwing stones at Henry?
Connections: I understand the anger Ralph is feeling. That was probably their only chance of being rescued but instead of having the signal fire they have meat instead. Leaving the empty feeling of never seeing your family again.
Summary: During the cool hours of the morning and afternoon the small boys around the age of six spend their hours playing in the sand. As a group of three smaller boys are playing in the sand, Roger and Maurice come down the mountain and destroy the sand castles made by the children. Soon the smaller boys disperse and Roger follows one named Henry. Henry makes his way toward the beach and begins playing in the shallow water. Roger then begins throwing stones at Henry slowly making each toss closer and closer to his head. Jack catches Roger and invites him into the jungle. Roger meets up with the other boys in the jungle. Jack shows the boys the white and red clay he is going to use to hunt the pigs. On the beach Ralph sees a what looks like a ship in the distance. He begins to race up the mountain side to check the signal fire. As Ralph and the other boys on the beach got to the fire, it was already dead. Ralph watched as the ship slowly sunk below the horizon. Jack and the other hunters return to the fire with a dead pig. Jack starts to tell Ralph of his adventures but Ralph to upset to listen tells Jack about the ship that could have taken them all home. Jack feels as though this whole situation is his fault and resorts to striking Piggy in the stomach in his anger. Breaking Piggy's glasses. Ralph forces Jack to apologize and they all begin to make a fire and roast the pig. They spend the rest of the night retelling the hunt.

Lord Of The Flies: Chapter 5
Prediction: I believe that tensions between Ralph and Jack over a power struggle will occur.
Clarifications: Ralph is holding a meeting to discuss some of the problems that have been occurring on the island.
Questions: Why is Ralph holding a meeting?
Connections: I understand what Ralph is feeling. He feels alone and betrayed by Jack who is bent on becoming ruler of the island. All Ralph wants to do is go back home to his family but without the help of the other boys, how is that going to happen.
Summary: Ralph calls a meeting to discuss some of the problems on the island like the use of the bathroom, work that has to be done on the island, and the irrational fear of an imaginary beast in the darkness. The meeting quickly shifted from talk of rules and to talk of beasts and ghosts. Fights break out between weather such things exist on the island or not. Soon the boys split, Jack has his group of irrational boys under the control of a sociopath bent on hunting pigs and monsters and Ralph's group of Piggy and Simon trying to desperately get home.

Lord Of The Flies: Chapter 6
Predictions: I believe that since Ralph is alone with Piggy and Simon, they must make their own group and survive on their own.
Clarifications: The dead parachutist who has died from the dog fight above the island. His body became strewn on the mountainside and the rocks. The wind moves his body around giving the illusion that he is a live.
Questions: What's the "beast from air"?
Connections: I understand the fear most of the boys must be feeling. To awake in the middle night and find some monster like figure in the dark. Like Sam and Eric, I would definitely run away.
Summary: As the boys sleep, a dog fight of military war planes rage above them. As an explosion takes place, a dead parachutist slowly sinks toward the island. His chute gets caught on the mountainside and the wind tosses his body to and fro, creating the illusion he is alive. The twins, San and Eric, in charge of the fire fall asleep. They awake to find the fire dead and begin the process of relighting it. As the fire spreads its warmth and light, they see the body of the dead parachutist and believe it to be the "beast". They awake Ralph and tell him their story. Ralph decides to hold a meeting to describe what happened that night. Jack and Ralph decide to have an expedition to find out where the "beast" is. They hunters make their way toward part of the island that they have never been before. They find part of the island with stones the boys soon use to roll into the sea. Ralph tries to get the boys back to the beach but many do not listen. Ralph and the other boys eventually make their way back.

Lord Of The Flies: Chapter 7
Predictions: The boys will soon forget the "beast" and start to have fun again.
Clarifications: The boys see the dead parachutist who was thrown atop the mountain by the wind.
Questions: What do the boys see at the top of the mountain?
Connections: I think we can all relate to that friend who takes the joke too far. As in the case of Jack who began to beat Robert who pretended to be a pig in their failed hunt.
Summary: As the boys make their way back from their expedition they take a break and have some fruit. Some of the boys try to go hunting after finding signs of a pig. Suddenly the boys come across a boar that nearly mauls Jack. Ralph is able to spear the boar but in the end isn't successful. After the unsuccessful hunt the boys haven't gotten over the hunt. They begin reenacting the hunt with Robert as the boar. As the game goes on, Robert begins to get beaten up as he pretends to be the boar. Ralph helps stop the rough play but the other boys plan to play again but with one of the younger boys to play as the pig. The group then decides that they won't be able to make it back to the beach until the next morning. Ralph, Jack, and Roger plan to climb the mountain. Jack makes his way to the top and believes that the "beast" is at the top. The "beast" in truth is actually the dead parachutist.

Lord Of The Flies: Chapter 8
Prediction: I believe that the dead parachutist's body will be blown unto the beach by the wind, scaring everybody into thinking he is the "beast".
Clarifications: The pig's head was meant to be a sacrifice to the "beast"
Questions: Why did Jack put the pig's head on a spike?
Connections: I understand what Ralph is feeling. He feels no one shares his desire to go home and how important the fire is.
Summary: Jack calls a meeting discussing what they have seen on the mountain. He then makes the rest of the group vote on who should be the leader but loses. Jack feels ashamed and leaves the meeting declaring that he will make his own tribe of hunters. Jack goes on a hunting trip with his tribe and takes down a pig. He then cuts the head off and puts the head on a spike as a gift for the "beast". Jack then takes his tribe down to the beach and raids Ralph of his fire. Also inviting Ralph and the other boys to his feast. All the while Simon is in the jungle hallucinating that the head of the pig is called the "Lord of the Flies" and is talking to him, Simon eventually passes out due to this ordeal.

Clarifications: Simon is killed during the dancing and the chanting by the boys who believe he is the "beast" and cause him to fall violently unto the rocks and dies.
Questions: How does Simon die?
Connections: I understand why Simon did what he did. He needed to tell the boys the truth about the "beast" and that it isn't a monster at all. He was the only person who could do this, but tragically dies.
Summary: A massive storm is underway with large brown and white clouds overhead with warm wind picking it up. Simon awakens from his momentary blackout and begins stumbling along the jungle floor. He makes his way toward the mountain and finds that the "beast" is actually a dead man. While at the beach, Ralph and Piggy make their way toward Jack's feast. They have meat and Jack discusses that the rest of the boys should join his tribe and have fun. The thunder and lightening start to pick up and Jack and the other boys begin to dance and chant. Simon stumbles out of the jungle and the other boys pretend that he is the beast and begin beating him up. Simon in fear starts to run away and falls off the big rock and falls to his death. As the weather worsens, the dead parachutist is picked up by the wind and is blown unto the beach scaring the boys into their shelters. The ocean breaks Simon body along the rocks and is washed away at sea.

Lord Of The Flies: Chapter 10
Prediction: I believe that Ralph and Piggy will blame Simon's death on Jack and things are going to get out of hand.
Clarifications: They attacked Ralph's camp so they could get Piggy's glasses to make a fire and cook meat.
Questions: Why would Jack and his hunters attack Ralph's camp?
Connections: If I was in Ralph's position, I would do the same thing. Fight back Jack and his group of bullies trying to steal things from their group.
Summary: The next day Ralph and Piggy try to make sense of what happened that night and what happened to Simon. they meet Sam and Eric on the beach and they all talk about the night before and lie about their involvement in the dance. Jack and his tribe make plans to go hunting and to take more fire form Ralph and his remaining group. That night Ralph began having dreams of home and seeing a strange bus. Prediction: I believe that Ralph is going to sneak into Jack's camp and take back Piggy's glasses so he can get home.
Clarifications: Ralph desperately tries to survive and finds a naval officer on the beach who saw the fire and smoke and is ready to take them home.
Questions: How does the story end?

Evaluation of Themes: Lord Of The Flies
Civilization vs. Savagery: The theme of civilization vs. savagery is clearly seen throughout the novel. This theme not only applies within the island's group setting but within the hearts and minds of all the boys. In the beginning, the boys create their own system of government. They elected a leader and everyone is assigned jobs to make life on the island easier. Gradually tensions between boys and a irrational fear of "beasts" start to destroy relations on the island. Eventually the boys split into tribes and resort to strange rituals which end in people getting murdered and others nearly killed. As time passes by on the island boys stop listening to their conscience and merely to animal instincts until all civilized feelings and emotions become nonexistent.

Evaluation of Symbols: Lord Of The Flies
The Signal Fire: The signal fire symbolizes a signal chance. A chance to get back home. A chance to see family and friends again, to live a normal life. As the story progresses, this "chance" becomes more and more slim as the other boys give up on this idea of getting back home. Until the end of the story, this "chance" was never quite clear until rescue takes them away from a world of savagery.
The "Beast": The "beast" is a symbol of fear and what it can do to the human spirit. Left alone, this fear blinds our conscience and dulls our ability to feel emotion, much like the situation that is shown throughout the novel. The boys are swept by this parasitic idea of fear and leads some boys to do some of the most vile acts portrayed in the novel. As in the savage murders of Simon and Piggy which were all carried out by this fear and rage brought by the so called "beast".
