Animal Farm: Chapter 1
Prediction: 1.) I believe the book, "Animal Farm" is about animals struggling for power.
2.) I believe that the animals are going to refuse to give any milk, eggs, or meat, to the farmer.
3.) I belive that the animals will lead a rebellion against the humans on the farm.
Clarifications: Major is an old prize winning boar who is like leader of the farm. Major calls the meeting to discuss a dream he has had about the future if the farm. In Major's dream he sees how abused the farm animals are and realizes that they can live a better life without humans. At the end of the meeting, Old Major began singing, "Beasts of England". All the animals soon joined in until their singing grew so loud that it woke up Farmer Jones, who quickly grabed the gun and shot out the window toward the barn. The animals quickly dispersed, but the idea was already planted and growing.
Questions: Who is Major and what was the meeting about? What was Major's dream about? What happened at the end of the meeting?
Connections: I understand why the animals want to start a rebellion. They are worked to the bone and are barely fed by an abusive owner. If someone wants a better life, they have to fight for it. I can also make connections with Old Major and Karl Marx. They both had grand ideas of a new system. One with true equality, a new life, without tyranny. My last connection is one with the royal family that once ruled Russia. They were much like Farmer Jones who only kept for himself and never gave back.
Summary: At Manor Farm, an old drunk farmer named Mr. Jones, heads for bed while his animals set out for a late night meeting. An old respected boar by the name of Major, holds the meeting to discuss a strange dream he has had about the future of the farm. In the barn, the horses, dogs, cows, pigs, pigeons, and sheep come to the meeting. Major discusses how cruelly the animals have been treated on the farm and how Mr. Jones only takes things away from them like milk, eggs, or meat. Major discusses that their greatest problem is man and without him, the farm would be prosperous. Old Major begins singing, "Beasts of England" unitl they are forced to quite down by Farmer Jones rifle.

Animal Farm: Chapter 2
Predictions: 1.) I predict that Farmer Jones will do something to spark a rebellion among the farm animals.
2.) Seeing how the pigs are the smartest animals on the farm, I believe that they will lead the rebellion.
3.) I believe that life on the farm is going to start off hard for the animals.
Clarifications: Three days after the meeting in the barn, Old Major died in his sleep. He was then promptly buried in the apple orchard. "Animalism" is a collection of teachings from Old Major about the duty of animals to stand up to the tyranny of man, with the main point of the philosophy being, "four legs good, two legs bad". The final straw for the animals was when Farmer Jones missed a whole weekend of harvest because of his drinking. The animals weren't fed for days and finally it was just to much. The animals chased Farmer Jones and his men off the farm in triumph.
Questions: What happened to Old Major soon after the meeting? What is "Animalism"? What was the final straw for the animals to start the revolution?
Connections: I understand why the animals decided to start the rebellion as soon as they did. After being starved of food for days, I would have no choice to fight back, just like the animals. During the Russian Revolution, the people revolted after being treated so wrongly by the people in power, that they had no choice but to fight back.
Summary: Soon after the meeting and Old Major's death, plans for a rebellion were being made in secret. The pigs began holding classes on the teachings of Old Major called "Animalism". It taught the animals the basis of what the future rebellion is about and inspired them that the rebellion would be a worthy cause. Soon, it was believed that the rebellion could happen much earlier than expected. When the harvest came, Farmer Jones spent his time drinking instead of checking over his crop and his animals. The animals went days without food and was eventually to much for them. The animals break into the feed room and began stealing the food. Farmer Jones then gathers his men to try and stop the animals. The men take out whips and begin beating the animals into submission, but this only angers the animals even more. They struck back at the men by kicking, biting, butting, and clawing their oppressors. Eventually the animals chase Farmer Jones and his men off the farm and the rebellion is a success. The animals then steal all the tools used for harming the animals like the knives for slaughtering and all the whips and chains and throw them into a fire. That night, the animals slept well and were happy to be finally free from humans. The next morning when the animals woke up, they soon remembered the actions of last night and once again rejoiced. The animals then began writing commandments for how to live on the farm and live by "Animalism". Soon after the animals head to the fields to begin the harvest.

Animal Farm: Chapter 3
Predictions: 1.) I believe that the animals on the farm will struggle with harvesting the crop.
2.) I believe since Snowball is teaching the other animals, the animals will soon become smarter than the humans.
3.) I believe that since the pigs are the smartest animals on the farm, they will soon take advantage of the other animals.
Clarifications: Snowball set up committees for the other animals to be able to voice their opinion. The smartest animals on the farm are the pigs who have learned to read and write just as well as the humans. The dumbest animals on the farm are the sheep, ducks, and hens who are unable to get past the letter A of the alphabet. The pigs convince the other animals that the milk and the apples, "even though pigs hate them" that they must eat them to keep their intelligence to the highest level to lead the animals.
Questions: What did Snowball set up for the other animals? Who are the smartest and dumbest animals on the farm? What happens to the milk and the apples on the farm?
Connections: I understand what the pigs are doing to the other animals. They are using their superior knowledge to able to convince the animals that they need the apples and the milk. If you put any person in position of power, they will abuse it some way or another.
Summary: The animals greatly struggled with harvesting the hay from the fields. The farming implements that were used, were designed to be handled by humans, not animals. Despite it, the pigs helped organize the work and by the end, the work was done and the animals had harvested the biggest crop yield the farm has ever had and two days faster. The work was hard but the animals toiled for the fruit of their labor. Every Sunday all the animals rested and Snowball, one of the pig leaders would hoist a flag to commemorate the rebellion. After the flag raising, the animals would make their way to the barn to discuss topics on how life on the farm could be improved and with the singing of "Beasts of England" to finish every meeting. The pigs then set up a place to study such things like carpentering, blacksmithing, and other fine trades of study, all of which had been learned from Farmer Jones' books. Snowball then began creating different committees to help the other animals voice their opinions. He then established reading and writing classes for the animals, which happened to be a huge success, even though many of the other animals are unable to read. When the apples began to ripen, the pigs convince the other animals that they must eat all the apples and keep all the milk as to keep their intelligence up to fight the clutches of evil men.

Animal Farm: Chapter 4
Predictions: 1.) I believe that when winter comes, the animals will struggle to survive the harsh weather alone.
2.) I believe that many animals will be injured in the fight between the animals and Farmer Jones.
3.) I believe that the animals won't be bothered by any humans after the battle between Farmer Jones and his men.
Clarifications: The pigeons brought news that Farmer Jones and his men were going to fight the animals to get their land back from the animals. At the rebellion, the animals successfully defeated the men with only the casualty being a single sheep, and Boxer nearly killing one of the men. The name of the rebellion is called the "Battle of the Cowshed" because of where the battle took place.
Questions: What is the news that the pigeons brought to the animals? What happens at the rebellion? What was the name of the rebellion?
Connections: If I was one of the animals after beating Farmer Jones and his men, I would immensely proud. Being able to beat them against the odds and save the farm. I also understand the sadness that Boxer feels after nearly killing one of Jones' men, it would be too much for someone to bear to kill someone, even during war time.
Summary: As let summer came around, news of the farm had spread all across England. Snowball and Napoleon would send out messengers pigeons to talk about the rebellion to other animals on farms across the countryside and teach them the song "Beasts of England". Some of the other farmers from neighboring farms were genuinely scared by the rebellion, fearing that a rebellion could occur on their own farm. Soon word came that Farmer Jones would be coming with his men to get his farm back. The animals expected Farmer Jones to come back to get his land back. Snowball previously studied wars fought by Julius Caesar to get prepared for the fight. Snowball got the animals in their posts to fight the men, he ordered the pigeons and the geese to first attack the men and to act as a distraction. The men then charged toward the farm buildings where the rest of the animals waited in ambush. The horses, cows, pigs and sheep, attacked the men until they finally retreated injured and heart broken. In the end, a sheep dies due to his injuries and is buried in the orchard near the body of Old Major and is awarded with "Animal Hero Second Class" to commemorate his actions on the battle field. The animals then find the gun that was left behind by Farmer Jones during the fight and the animals decide that it should be fire twice a year to celebrate the rebellion and the "Battle of the Cowshed".

Animal Farm: Chapter 5
Predictions: 1.) I believe that news will spread about the "Battle of the Cowshed" and animals from other animals from local farms will join the cause.
2.) I believe that the windmill would greatly help the animals if it were to be built.
3.) I believe that the animals will revolt against Napoleon because of his actions against Snowball.
Clarifications: Mollie is caught on the outskirts of the farm being pet by a neighboring farm hand which clearly goes against the main point of "Animalism" of "Four Legs Good, Two Legs Bad". Mollie eventually disappears but to be seen sometime later on the other side of town, pulling a cart for a rich politician and being fed sugar cubes. The plan that Snowball has for the farm is to build a windmill to produce electricity to make life easier for the animals. Napoleon commands his dogs to attack Snowball but luckily Snowball makes it out alive but to never been seen again.
Questions: What is Mollie caught doing? What happens to her? What plans does Snowball have for the farm? What happens to Snowball?
Connections: I can see what Squealer's job on the farm is. He is simply Napoleon's propaganda machine much like what Stalin used. Stalin used the same tactics in the Soviet Union. He would turn people against their leaders and could simply change the way they thought by having someone simply talk great about him.
Summary: As time goes on, Mollie the horse shows that she is very lazy and rarely does any work. She is even caught by Clover who finds her being pet by one of the farm hands on a neighboring farm. When confronted, she denies it in fear of the other animals. Soon after Mollie disappears for weeks, until news comes from the pigeons saying how she is on the other side of town pulling carts for a rich politician and surprisingly enjoying herself. As the winter months came about the farm, severe weather came with it. The snow and ice froze the ground like stone making any effort in the field impossible. So to this, the pigs began making plans for the coming spring for the animals to do. One such plan was that of the windmill. Snowball came up with the idea to build the windmill in an effort to create electricity to heat the animal stalls, run machinery, and allow electricity over the whole farm and make life easier. Napoleon was the only animal not in favor of the windmill and argued that too much time spent on building would mean less food being produced. As Snowball finished his plans for the windmill and the meeting to decide if it should be built occurs, Snowball gives an excellent speech to gain the support of the animals. Everything changes when Napoleon calls his dogs in who savagely try to kill Snowball but Snowball somehow escapes unharmed but to never been seen again. As the other animals watched the spectacle, they could only feel fear as the dogs came back to the barn to sit by Napoleon's side who then tells the animals that Sunday meetings will now be banned and no animal shall engage in debates. Later, Squealer convinces the other animals that Snowball was a criminal and clearly deserved to be run off the farm and the animals eventually accept his answer. As spring came, Napoleon announced that the windmill will be built. Squealer than gives the animals an explanation for this, saying that the windmill was Napoleon's idea in the first place and simply pretended to hate the idea, so Snowball, who stole his idea, believed him. Eventually the animals believe this explanation.

Animal Farm: Chapter 6
Predictions: 1.) I believe that the construction of the windmill will begin and the work is going to be incredibly hard.
2.) I believe that trading with the humans will be the first of other rules that will be broken by Napoleon.
3.) I believe that the animals have no choice but to begin rebuilding the windmill.
Clarifications: Napoleon announced that the farm will begin trading with the humans to combat the ever growing problem of low supplies. Napoleon has decided to trade with Mr. Whymper to get hold of important supplies involving the construction of the windmill. After a night of bad weather, the windmill crashes down and is destroyed. Napoleon then blames the destruction of the windmill on Snowball.
Questions: What was the announcement from Napoleon which shocked the other animals? Who is Napoleon trading goods with? What happens to the windmill?
Connections: I can connect to what the animals must be feeling after seeing all their hard work destroyed. It must be hard to have been working for nearly a year to find our that all that work was in vain.
Summary: The work on the farm was hard for all the animals except the pigs and a new rule was established that everyone must work on Sunday afternoons or have their rations reduced in half. To begin the construction of the windmill, the animals had to gather stones from the quarry which would be an unbearable job by itself. The only main problem with the stones was how to break up the stones into usable size stones. After quite a while, the animals found out a way to break up the stones by tying a rope around a boulder and dropping it a top other rocks at the bottom of the quarry. As soon as the stones were broken up, the horses would cart them up to the top to begin the foundation. Boxer was no doubt the hardest worker. He would spend hours nonstop pulling cartloads of stone and would even wake up close to an hour earlier than any of the other animals. Life on the farm was good but every animal had to pull his own weight to work on the windmill. Problems did arise when supplies were low and the they couldn't be simply made. This problem was fixed by Napoleon who announced that the farm will begin trading with the humans to the animals amazement. After Squealer soothed the animals fear of having to coming in contact with the humans. So every Monday, Mr. Whymper would make his way to the farm to engage in business. Around this time, the animals noticed that the pigs had moved into the house. Once again the animals faintly remembered that the animals were not supposed to live inside a house but quickly enough Squealer convinced the animals that the pigs needed a quite a place to work to make sure life on the farm was better when Farmer Jones owned it. It was then that animals also learned that the pigs have been sleeping in the beds which clearly went against one of the commandments. As the animals began reading the commandments it was found that the commandments stated that "No animal shall sleep in a bed with sheets". The animals just took this as part of the commandment they had forgotten. As the new season of fall moved in the building of the windmill was almost finished, until a night of severe weather came along and destroyed the windmill. The next day as the animals made their way to the ruins, they saw all their hard work scattered along the ground. Napoleon who then blamed the whole event on Snowball who came in the night and destroyed the windmill single handily. Napoleon then sets a bounty on Snowball's head for anybody who can capture him. All the animals then receive the order to immediately begin rebuilding of the windmill and work will continue nonstop through the winter until it is finished.

Animal Farm: Chapter 7
Predictions: 1.) I believe that Napoleon will begin having his dogs doing night patrols to look for Squealer.
2.) I believe that Napoleon and his dogs are going to go on a witch hunt to find conspirators with snowball.
3.) I believe that with the executions taken place, no animal really trust the pigs and may want to leave.
Clarifications: Napoleon orders them to give up 400 eggs in order to sell them to buy food for the farm. The hens than rebel to this idea and refuse to give any eggs to Napoleon. Soon their rations are taken away and nine hens die in the process. At the assembly which was ordered by Napoleon, a group of animals confessed to crimes and blamed their actions on that of Snowball, all confessors were promptly executed until a pile of bodies remained. "Beats of England" is no longer sung because Napoleon fears that such a song may rally the animals into a rebellion or political coop.
Questions: What happens to the hens? What happens at the assembly? Why is "Beasts of England" no longer being sung?
Connections: If I was one of the animals who saw the executions, I would no doubt leave the farm. After seeing your friends being brainwashed and slowly giving up all their rights to the tyranny of the pigs, I would have lived better under Jones then Napoleon.
Summary : The winter was unbelievably harsh with deep snow and ice storms. It was decided that the walls of the new windmill would be much thicker and have a better foundation. As the long winter carried on, food shortages were an ever constant threat. Rumors continued to spread out in the town about Animal Farm and its food shortages. The napoleon than declared that 400 hundred eggs were to be surrendered to sell to Mr. Whymper to pay for food for the animals. The hens quickly rebelled against this idea and went on strike until their rations were taken away and nine died of starvation and all the eggs were delivered on time. To gather more money for the farm, Napoleon decided to sell some timber to one of the other local farmers. As spring came, rumors that Snowball was secretly visiting the farm at night began to spread. Anytime something went wrong on the farm, the pigs would blame Snowball for their misfortune. Squealer then convinces the other animals that snowball was helping Farmer Jones in the very beginning, even before the rebellion which the animals eventually accept as truth. A few days later, Napoleon orders an assembly, where his dogs drag four pigs before him. The pigs then confessed to being traitors with Snowball and had destroyed the windmill. Along with the pigs, many other animals step up and confess to being traitors. All animals who confessed are executed by the dogs until a pile of bodies remains. Later Napoleon decrees that "Beasts of England" is to be sung no more for fear that it may rally the animals into a rebellion against him.
Animal Farm: Chapter 8
Predictions: 1.) I believe that the humans will hear about the evil at the farm and will try to kill the pigs.
2.) I believe that Farmer Frederick will launch an attack on Animal Farm.
3.) I believe that the animals won't be able to defend against Frederick and his heavy weapons.
Clarifications: Napoleon sold a pile of timber to Farmer Frederick for a large sum of money only to be paid with fake money which then resulted with a death sentence on Frederick's head. Frederick and his men come armed and ready to capture the farm. Frederick and his men blow up the windmill with explosives until only a hole in the ground is all that remains.
Questions: What happens with the deal with Farmer Frederick? What happens the next day? What happens to the Windmill?
Connections: After having two years of pain staking work taken away from you, that has to be the worst feeling in the word. I understand what the animals must be feeling after seeing the windmill destroyed for the second time. The amount of rage I would feel would be enough to kill whoever did it.
Summary: Days after the executions, the animals faintly remembered that one of the commandments of "Animalism" is that no animal may kill another. The animals go to the barn to read the commandments and find the sixth one which read "No animal shall kill any other animal without cause". The animals just convince themselves that they must have forgotten the end of the commandment. Again that animals toiled to rebuild the windmill. Every so often Squealer would tell the other animals that the food production had increased by irrational amounts over short periods of time, but the animals saw no reason not to believe it. Napoleon was then treated like God and any stoke of fortune on the farm was credited to him. As the summer progressed on, the windmill was nearly finished, but rumors of another attacked lingered on the farm. When the windmill was finally finished, the animals were overjoyed and Napoleon name the windmill, "Napoleon Windmill". Napoleon then made a deal with a farmer called Frederick for some timber, but the animals were only paid with forged money and was rendered useless. The next day, Frederick and 15 men came to take the farm over. The animals then charged at the men but only to be shot down in vain. Frederick and his men, made their way to the windmill where they bore a whole in the wall to hold sticks of dynamite. As the men ran away. the windmill blew up in smoke and debris. As the animals saw this, they quickly were filled with anger and pain and soon wanted revenge. They all stormed the men by surprise where many animals did fall. They fought till Frederick and his men escaped and walked back broken and bloody in the battle known as the "Battle of the Windmill". That night, the pigs found a barrel of whisky and got very drunk. The next morning, the pigs were all tired and hungover and it was believed that Napoleon was dying but was simply sick form the night before. A few nights later, Squealer was seen disorientated after falling from a ladder with a paint brush, clearly changing the commandments but no animal had any idea. The new commandment reading, "No animal shall drink alcohol to excess".

Animal Farm: Chapter 9
Predictions: 1.) I believe that Boxer won't recover from his injuries from the Battle of the Windmill.
2.) I believe that Moses the raven will start a rebellion against Napoleon.
3.) I believe that the animals will confront the pigs about Boxer's death.
Clarifications: The barely was being used to make beer for the pigs which went against the commandment of no consumption of alcohol but the pigs found a way to trick the other animals that they were wrong. While Boxer was working, he collapsed and was unable to get back up and was bleeding from his mouth. Boxer was picked up by a horse slaughter to only be boiled down to make glue, and to never be seen again.
Questions: What was the barely being used for? What happened to Boxer while working? Where did Boxer go?
Connections: I couldn't help but be so angry reading this section. How could the other animals be so stupid and let their best friend be taken to be slaughtered. If I was Benjamin I would have taken a more active role in trying to help him.
Summary: The injuries that Boxer received from the Battle of the Windmill was causing his a great deal of pain but yet he was determined to rebuild the windmill. Boxer was nearly 12 years old and was close to retirement, and was excited for what lay in store for him. That same year, Napoleon bred 31 new piglets and had ordered that a schoolhouse should be built to educate the young. New rules were made for the young piglets, like if a piglet and another animal met, the other animal must make room for the piglet to cross. Even though the farm had a decent year, money was still needed to build the schoolhouse. Despite this, the animals help small parades around the farm to honor everything that the farm stood for. When spring came around Animal Farm proclaimed to be a republic and must elect a president with only Napoleon as a candidate. Moses the raven soon appeared and talks of Sugarcandy Mountain which makes the animals realize that their lives are hard and laborious and that nothing has really changed since the day of Jones. As spring came, Boxer became determined to work hard till his retirement. But as his condition worsened, he could barely work until he collapsed while carting rocks from the quarry. He found lying down, unable to move and bleeding from his mouth. Boxer was then put in his stall until the veterinarian was supposed to pick him up. One day as the other animals were working in the fields, Boxer was being taken away. They managed to see him before he left but to find out he was going to be boiled down to glue and killed. All the animals were shocked and tried to help but there was nothing tat could been done, that was the last of Boxer. Squealer then convinces the other animals that Boxer died in the hospital peacefully and only wished for the windmill to be finished. Later the pigs threw a party to commemorate the life of Boxer and had somehow found the money to buy some whisky.

Animal Farm: Chapter 10
Predictions: 1.) I believe that some of the animals will become slaves and will have no rights at all.
2.) I believe that the farmers will try to implement the same tactics the pigs use on their own animals.
3.) I believe that in the future, nothing will change and the pigs will always rule.
Clarifications: The farm is dominated by the pigs who act like humans and control the farm with fear and an iron fist. Humans were at the farm to see how productive the farm was and if they could use any of the secrets to make their animals work harder. At the end, the other animals can't tell the difference between the faces of the pigs or the humans.
Questions: What is the farm like now? Why were humans at the farm? What happens at the end of the story?
Connections: I understand how the other animals must be feeling. They feel like there is no hope for them and that the pigs control everything. They originally fought for freedom but live the rest of their lives as slaves.
Summary: Years passed by and many of the former animals died. The majority of the pigs survived and became spoiled. The windmill was finally completed but was only used to thrash corn and make a profit. All the promises that were made by Snowball were just a thing of the past. As time passed, the pigs were found to walk on two legs and even where clothes. They carried whips and even socialized with humans. On the barn, there were no more commandments but just one saying, "All Animals Are Equal, But Some Animals Are More Equal Than Others" . The pigs then made deals with the other farmers to share in the prosperity of the farm. In the end, the other animals couldn't tell if the who were the pigs and the men were inside the house, they're faces so much a like.

Animal Farm: Themes
The Vulnerability of an Unsophisticated Working Class: Throughout the novel we see how blinded the other animals are compared to the pigs. The cows, sheep, horses, chickens, they're taken advantage of due to their low level of intelligence. Commandments are changed throughout and even memories are manipulated into whatever Squealer says. The animals soon forget what life was like during the time of Jones and even how to live according to Old Major's teachings. The animals are used as cheap labor into this feeling of pride and freedom, but are simply more oppressed now, then under control from the humans.
The Evils Ideals of the Soviet Machine: In "Animal Farm" we see how the corruption and control was part of the farm and we can clearly see a direct correlation with that of the Soviet Union. Napoleon soon realizes the power he has is unlimited. The same can be said about Joseph Stalin who went for a power grab and became controlled by this power. We clearly see that the communist system can not work because such problems as greed, thievery, deception, control, power, gluttony, are universal themes and are seen on both spectrums.
Deception of Language as a Means of Control: Squealer in "Animal Farm" is much like that of the Soviet propaganda. Squealer as the ability to convince people of anything. Squealer convinced the other animals multiple times concerning that of commandments and even their own memories on battles and rebellions. The animals were convinced that their own leader Snowball was a completely different person or in the case of Boxer who was murdered but this deception of language is nothing new and is as effective today as it was 50 years ago.

Animal Farm: Motifs
Pride: Throughout the story, the animals live and die for pride. The main reason they rebelled was for freedom and in the beginning, the farm was a place to call your own, there is immense pride in that feeling of being your own man. The pigs convince the other animals of the pride that comes with hard work and devotion to a leader like Napoleon in the story.
Music/Singing: In the story, singing and music are tools the pigs use to keep the other animals in the farm. Every time "Beasts of England" is sung, it connects the animals with the feeling of freedom and they take huge joy in that. By finding a way to connect with other animals for the same cause, singing establishes a platform for a revolution to change ones life.
Celebrations/Commemoration: throughout the book, the animals gather together to celebrate such things as the rebellion and battles. These help the animals remember what they have fought for and what they must continue in the future to stay free form the hands of men. These celebrations are used to identify heroes, a motivation of greatness which sets a standard for other animals to reach.

Animal Farm: Symbols
"Beasts of England": The Song "Beasts of England" is a symbol because it represents a dream, a longing for freedom. It is sung throughout the book until it is banned because of what it stands for. The pigs realize how important that sung was rallying up the other animals and if that song inspires them, the pigs are would lose everything. The song is a symbol for a better tomorrow, a true chance at freedom.
Windmill: The windmill is a symbol for communism because it represents how impossible it is for working. Snowball's plan for the windmill is so grand almost like Karl Marx's ideas on communism. But when it is established, it is continually destroyed and never works. Even in the end when the windmill is being used for the corn, it isn't being used to help the common animals, it is used to give power to the rich.
