She becomes the local buzz in school by coming to school in an old Victorian wedding dress and playing the ukulele. Everyone is stunned by her appearance. Especially two students named Leo and Kevin who want to interview her for their school TV show called "Hot Seat". Some of the students believe that she was planted in the school by administrators trying to start school spirit. Everyday as she came to school, she would dress in an outrageous dress or costume and everyday she sang "Happy Birthday" to someone. She was even spotted carrying a pet rat in her bag at school. Stargirl was definitely something else. Leo and Kevin began fighting on whether or not they should let Stargirl go on "Hot Seat". As Leo begins to be pestered by Kevin and other students about putting her on "Hot Seat", Leo tries following her after school. Leo follows her for hours, past hundreds of houses and past the highway into the desert. Finally, Leo gives up the chase and turns to run home.

But toward the end of the game, one of the fans threw a ripe tomato which hit Stargirl square in the face. The next morning, Leo found a valentine with the words "I LOVE YOU", signed by the one and only, Stargirl.

The next day he spent his time at Archie's house where they talked about the news about Stargirl and basketball but Archie already knew everything. The next day Stargirl approached Leo's table. She said a quick hello and goodbye as Leo thanked her for the valentines day card. Latter that day as Leo looks for Stargirl, he over hears that she has been kicked off the cheerleading team. He found himself walking to her house, not knowing what he would do when he saw her. As he got to her house, he never went in or very close to it for that matter. As he stood outside Stargirl's house, she suddenly came outside. Leo hid behind a park car in her driveway while she made her way to him. They both talked, Leo still hiding behind the car while Stargirl talking over him. She let Cinnamon sit on Leo, who eveuntaully scurried underneath the car and both parties said goodnight. No one acknowledge that Stargirl and him even existed. Leo didn't feel the love he felt before, only the isolation from the other students. All the while, Stargirl excels at the local oratorical contest and would be going to state. Stargirl would practice on Leo retelling her speech. Leo began to really fall more and more in love with Stargirl. She taught him how to laugh, how to smile, and especially how to live. Stargirl and Leo would go around town and deliver little presents to people who are going through rough times or who just need a boost in their everyday life. That is when Leo finds out that Stargirl gave him a present when he was younger. They latewr go to the mall and play a game where you follow somebody for fun and you try to guess everything about them. They spend the whole day doing this and Leo sits back simply learning everything he can from her. Next Leo decided to spend the day with Stargirl and her parents. She showed him ordinary home and room. Well spending time with Stargirl, she showed him her collection of pictures of little boy named Peter who lived down the street. With all the astonishment and amazement he found from Stargirl, he couldn't help but kiss her. After awhile of being at school, of being ignored, and his girlfriend being hated by the other student, it was soon becoming to hard for him.

Throughout the day, Leo tries to avoid his girlfriend, in the lunchroom and in the hallways. After school, Stargirl confronts Leo about his actions toward her. Leo realizes what he must do. After school one day, Stargirl takes Leo into the courtyard to talk about their situation. Leo explains to her how she can't keep doing the things she has been doing. Trying to be different. Leo begins explaining to her how people are supposed to act. Soon after, Stargirl vanished. The next day, a new girl was a school and her name was Susan, no sign of Stargirl at all. She wore makeup, different clothes, and jewelry. She looked like a hundred of the same girls at school. When they hung out, they went to the movies and to the mall instead of making cards or following people for fun. Soon they both realized that no one was still talking to them. Susan began thinking that all this was for nothing. The next day, she tells Leo of her vision of winning the Sate Oratorical Contest and how the school would give her a hero's welcome. The State Contest was about a week away and they both believed that she would win.
Stargirl: Chapters 27-29
Predictions: 1.) I believe that Susan is going to win the State Oratorical Contest.
2.) I believe that Susan is going to have some serious competition at the contest.
3.) I believe that Susan will come home to a hero's welcome.
Clarifications: Susan's first speech was completely different from the speech that she had been working on. She simply came up with it as she went on. Susan expected a hero's welcome but there was nobody.
Questions: What was different about Susan's first speech? What happened when Leo and Susan arrived back home to Mica?
Connections: I can understand the pain that Leo must be feeling for Susan. To win and to expect everyone to be happy for you, but thee is nobody.
Summary: Leo and Susan left for Phoenix for the State Oratorical Contest. They both rode together in the backseat of Mr. McShane's car. The whole way, Susan talked about winning the contest and coming home to a hero's welcome and finally becoming popular. At the first stage of the contest, Susan surprised everyone with a new speech that she had never given before. After the speech, Mr. McShane and Leo congratulated her for her amazing speech. Later night, the final stage of the contest was held in a packed auditorium with hundreds of spectators. One by one, all ten of the contestants gave their speech. While she gave her speech, she simply talked about life. Suddenly after her speech, the whole auditorium erupted in roar of clapping and cheering. Susan won the whole competition. Everyone in the town of Phoenix congratulated her. TV crews swarmed her, she signed autographs for fans. She was town hero. Her trophy consisted of a silver plate which meant the world to her. As they left for Mica, Susan was unusually nervous. She wanted to see a hero's welcome. She wanted to see the whole school stand behind her with streamers and signs. But there weren't any. She only saw a few teachers and her only friend Dori. No welcome awaited her.
